## What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

### Severe Toothache

Dental pain that is persistent, severe, or waking you at night should be assessed as soon as possible. Toothache can result from tooth decay reaching the nerve, a cracked tooth, a dental abscess, gum infection, or tooth fracture. Early treatment is almost always simpler and less costly than waiting until the problem becomes critical.

### Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Tooth

A chipped or cracked tooth can expose the inner layers of the tooth to bacteria and temperature. Depending on the extent of the damage, treatment may range from polishing a rough edge to bonding, a crown, or root canal therapy. Do not delay - a small chip can become a larger fracture.

### Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth is a genuine emergency. The sooner the tooth is replaced, the better the chance of saving it. If you knock out an adult tooth:

1. Pick it up by the crown (white part) - do NOT touch the root
2. Rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty - do NOT scrub
3. If possible, place the tooth back in the socket immediately
4. If you cannot reinsert it, store it in milk or between your gum and cheek
5. Call 13 13 16 immediately and come in within 30 minutes if possible

Note: Do NOT attempt to reinsert a baby (primary) tooth - this can damage the adult tooth developing underneath.

### Lost or Broken Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown leaves the tooth unprotected and sensitive. Bacteria can enter and cause rapid decay or infection in an unprotected tooth. Seeing a dentist within a day or two is strongly recommended. In the meantime, over-the-counter temporary dental cement (from a pharmacy) can provide short-term protection.

### Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a pocket of infection that can spread rapidly. Symptoms include a throbbing toothache, facial swelling, a bad taste in the mouth, fever, and difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth. Abscesses require prompt dental treatment - call 13 13 16 immediately.

**When to call 000 (triple zero):** If you have significant difficulty swallowing, significant facial swelling spreading to your neck or eyes, difficulty breathing, or difficulty opening your mouth to speak - call 000 or go to a hospital emergency department immediately. These can be signs of a spreading infection requiring immediate hospital management.

### Dental Trauma

Sports injuries, falls, and accidents can result in chipped, fractured, displaced, or knocked-out teeth. Even if a tooth does not appear badly damaged after trauma, it should be assessed - internal damage and root fractures may not be visible to the untrained eye.

Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard during contact and collision sports significantly reduces the risk of dental trauma. Core Dental provides custom-fitted dual-laminate mouthguards for all ages.

### Swollen Jaw or Gum

Swelling around the jaw or in the gum can indicate infection. Dental infections can spread quickly to surrounding tissues and, in rare cases, to the neck and airway. Do not leave facial swelling unassessed.

### Bleeding Gums

While some gum bleeding during brushing can be an early sign of gum disease (managed with regular care), sudden or heavy gum bleeding - particularly after trauma - requires prompt assessment.
