What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment) is used to save a tooth that has become infected or severely damaged at its pulp - the soft tissue at the centre containing nerves and blood vessels.

When bacteria reach the pulp through deep decay, a crack, or trauma, infection develops. Without treatment, the infection can spread to surrounding bone and tissue. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals the tooth to prevent reinfection.

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

The Root Canal Process

1. Assessment - X-rays confirm the extent of infection and the anatomy of the root canals
2. Anaesthetic - the tooth and surrounding area are thoroughly numbed
3. Cleaning - the infected pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected
4. Sealing - the canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) and sealed
5. Crown - strongly recommended to protect the restored tooth from fracture

Root canal treatment typically requires 1-3 visits. Complex cases may be referred to a specialist endodontist.
