Root canal treatment is a procedure that treats infection or severe inflammation inside a tooth. Your teeth are not solid - each one contains a soft inner tissue called the pulp, made up of nerves and blood vessels. When harmful bacteria penetrate the pulp through deep decay, a crack, or dental trauma, the infection can cause intense pain and, if left untreated, an abscess that threatens the health of neighbouring teeth and your jaw. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the internal canals of the tooth, and seals it to prevent reinfection. The alternative to root canal treatment is usually tooth extraction - but saving your natural tooth is nearly always the better option for your long-term oral health. ### Do You Need Root Canal Treatment? The procedure is not painful - you will be numb throughout, and many patients are surprised by how calm and manageable the experience actually is. Here is what to expect: 1. **Diagnosis** - We take digital X-rays and carry out a clinical assessment to confirm the extent of infection 2. **Anaesthetic** - The area is fully numbed using local anaesthetic 3. **Access** - A small opening is made at the top of the tooth 4. **Pulp removal** - Infected pulp tissue is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and canals 5. **Cleaning and shaping** - The canals are meticulously cleaned, shaped, and disinfected 6. **Filling** - The prepared canals are filled with a biocompatible sealing material 7. **Crown placement** - A dental crown is placed to restore strength and protect the treated tooth from fracture Most cases require one to three appointments.
