Wisdom teeth problems can appear suddenly and cause considerable pain and swelling. Core Dental Wyndham offers thorough wisdom tooth assessment and experienced extraction services, with emergency appointments often available within hours. Located near Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre with on-site parking, we are here when you need us most.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last four molars to erupt - usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Because the jaw is fully formed by the time they arrive, they frequently run out of space. This can lead to impaction, infection, decay, and pain.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

At Core Dental Wyndham, we take an evidence-based approach to wisdom tooth management - we will only recommend extraction when it is genuinely in your best interest. Common reasons include:

  • Impaction - The tooth is trapped in the bone or gum and cannot erupt normally
  • Pericoronitis - Repeated or severe infection of the gum tissue over a partially erupted wisdom tooth
  • Decay - In the wisdom tooth or the neighbouring molar, in a position impossible to fill effectively
  • Cysts - Fluid-filled sacs around impacted teeth that can damage surrounding bone
  • Chronic pain or pressure at the back of the jaw linked to wisdom tooth position

We use digital X-rays and, where needed, OPG panoramic X-rays to thoroughly assess your wisdom teeth and give you clear advice.

The Extraction Process

Simple extractions of erupted or partially erupted wisdom teeth are performed under local anaesthetic in our dental chair. The procedure is straightforward and most patients are comfortable throughout.

Surgical extractions of deeply impacted wisdom teeth or those in proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve may be referred to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for day surgery under general anaesthetic. Medicare rebates may apply. Your dentist at Core Dental Wyndham will explain exactly what is involved and manage the referral on your behalf.

We also offer sleep dentistry at Wyndham for highly anxious patients.

Recovery After Extraction

Post-extraction care is important for a smooth recovery:

  • Rest for the day after the procedure
  • Apply ice to the jaw to reduce swelling
  • No smoking for 72 hours or more - smoking significantly raises the risk of dry socket
  • Avoid straws and alcohol for 48 hours
  • Eat soft foods for several days
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water from the day after the extraction
  • Take any prescribed medications as directed

If severe pain develops 2-3 days after the procedure, contact us promptly - this may indicate dry socket.
